Take the Initiative and Sprint to the Finish Line<\/h2>\n

The Big Push is on.\u00a0 High school senior athletes\u00a0around the globe are squirming in their seats wondering if their dream to play college athletics will come true at some time over the next six months.\u00a0 If you are one of those seniors, take notes.\u00a0 It’s time to push forward and there’s little time to waste.<\/p>\n

If you do not have a firm scholarship offer in hand, don’t assume you will receive one.\u00a0 Anything can, and will, happen in recruiting.\u00a0 However, it’s unpredictable, so\u00a0protect yourself by covering all your bases.<\/p>\n

Take these steps:<\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Make a list.<\/strong>\u00a0Create a list of all the coaches which have shown you serious interest.\u00a0\u00a0This list should include any school\u00a0from which a coach in your sport has continually written you and\/or\u00a0called you at home at least once.\u00a0 Don’t include your “dream schools” on this list.\u00a0\u00a0If\u00a0those schools have not contacted you, other than a questionnaire, you will be spinning your wheels reaching out to them.\u00a0 Time is of the essence at this point.<\/li>\n
  2. Eliminate from your list.<\/strong>\u00a0Cross off any of these schools which you\u00a0have\u00a0visited and did not like.\u00a0 This should leave you with a list of colleges to contact.<\/li>\n
  3. Call the coaches on the list.<\/strong>\u00a0 Ask them if you\u00a0are still on their recruiting list.\u00a0 If so, ask\u00a0where you stand.\u00a0 Be nice, but ask.\u00a0\u00a0Express your interest in remaining on their final\u00a0list and\u00a0ask the coaches if they need anything further to help make their decision.\u00a0 Take notes of these conversations and be sure to follow-up immediately on any requests the coaches make.<\/li>\n
  4. Create a new list.<\/strong>\u00a0Make a revised list of the schools which have indicated to you that you still have a shot at a scholarship or roster offer.\u00a0 Email these coaches ASAP.\u00a0\u00a0Send them\u00a0any updated info.\u00a0 If you\u00a0have info on a Web site,\u00a0include the link to this site.<\/li>\n
  5. Make Contact.<\/strong>\u00a0Try to get as much face time as possible with these coaches.\u00a0 Attend their games, visit them on\u00a0their\u00a0campuses, find any reason to\u00a0stay in touch.\u00a0\u00a0There is an old\u00a0saying: “The squeaky wheel gets the grease.”\u00a0\u00a0This often holds true at this stage of the recruiting process.\u00a0 The more interest you show a coach, the more interested they\u00a0may become\u00a0in you.<\/li>\n
  6. Repeat this process weekly.\u00a0<\/strong> Yes, weekly.\u00a0\u00a0You are in a c0mpetitive situation.\u00a0 Compete.\u00a0 Get into the game and do it aggressively.\u00a0 Don’t wait\u00a0any longer for coaches to come to you\u00a0or for your high school coach to send a tape.\u00a0 Get hopping.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Trust the Process<\/h2>\n

    Your shot at\u00a0playing college athletics happens once.\u00a0 If you are\u00a0a solid student-athlete and have\u00a0received no attention from college coaches it probably means that you\u00a0have\u00a0waited for something to happen because\u00a0someone around you said that if you are good enough coaches would find you.<\/p>\n

    Now you know that’s a bunch of hooey.\u00a0 The best thing you could have possibly done was to\u00a0work with a professional scouting service, like National Scouting Report, which\u00a0would have continuously promoted you to coaches and given you advice along the way.<\/p>\n

    It’s up to you to get this done\u00a0if you are intent on\u00a0seeing it happen.\u00a0 Jump in with both feet and don’t stop.\u00a0 There is a place out there for you.\u00a0 It may not be your top choice, but if you are\u00a0a good athlete with good to great grades, there is a college coach who needs you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
