Between now and the second week of January a total of 35 college bowl games will be played.\u00a0 One will matter.\u00a0 The rest are fluff games engineered by the BCS and bowl game committees, with the permission of the NCAA, which will have no real meaning except that participating teams get an extra month or so of practice heading into their winter drills and spring practice sessions, and a few of the teams will take home some coin.\u00a0\u00a0Oh, there are some intriguing match-ups.\u00a0 Arkansas and Ohio State?\u00a0 That\u00a0should be a barn burner.\u00a0 Boise\u00a0State and Utah?\u00a0 That’ll be some fun.\u00a0\u00a0TCU and Wisconsin will be good for a look-see.\u00a0 But, for the most part, while the excitement of the moment is palpable, nearly every school will actually lose money.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because the people\u00a0 running the bowls require schools to purchase a minimum number of game tickets at full price.\u00a0 The schools will sell a fraction of those tickets, and worse yet, they will not be receiving any refunds from the bowl bigwigs.\u00a0\u00a0 Oh, and the schools get the pleasure of paying all\u00a0their team’s, cheerleaders’ and band’s expenses.\u00a0\u00a0That’s hotel, food and travel for, what, 350 or more people for five days or more?\u00a0 No help from the bowl people there, either.\u00a0 Sounds like there are a lot of folks getting rich on the bowls, except the schools.\u00a0 There’s just something not quite right about this arrangement.\u00a0 If there was\u00a0ever a time for a playoff system, it’s now.\u00a0 The teams might lose money, but at least the games would mean something.\u00a0 What do you say?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
