{"id":2082,"date":"2010-11-23T09:18:30","date_gmt":"2010-11-23T15:18:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/\/?p=2082"},"modified":"2010-11-23T09:18:30","modified_gmt":"2010-11-23T15:18:30","slug":"what-are-college-coaches-thinking-post-esp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/what-are-college-coaches-thinking-post-esp\/","title":{"rendered":"What Are College Coaches Thinking Post-ESP?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Real Recruiting Work is Just Beginning for Most College Coaches<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2088\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2088\" style=\"width: 167px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Coach-thinking.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2088\" title=\"Coach thinking\" src=\"\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Coach-thinking.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"177\" height=\"232\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2088\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">For most college coaches, real recruiting starts after the ESP is over and done.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nearly all NCAA Division I and II\u00a0coaches have just completed the Early Signing Period (ESP).\u00a0 (A few sports must wait until 2011 for their one and only signing period to happen.)\u00a0 Some coaches are breathing easier because they&#8217;ve been fortunate enough to land all their top recruits.\u00a0 Others are exhausted and out of\u00a0breath from the long recruiting ordeal while knowing there&#8217;s more to be accomplished since their rosters still have open spots to be filled.\u00a0 But perhaps surprising to many parents and high school seniors is that even more coaches\u00a0have sat out the ESP altogether and are waiting to see which prospects didn&#8217;t realize their dream of signing early.\u00a0 When the proverbial dust settles, these coaches go to work attempting to lure these unsigned seniors to their programs.<\/p>\n<p>Only\u00a0slightly more than 30 percent of all NCAA DI &amp; DII prospects sign during the ESP.\u00a0 Considering that about 3,300 altogether will sign DI and DII National Letters of Intent in the Class of 2011, 2,200 roster spots remain open leaving a whole bundle of\u00a0prospects anxious to see\u00a0when and if their chance will finally arrive to play at the next level.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s DIII, NAIA and\u00a0NJCAA openings which get very little attention.\u00a0 Together the number of colleges in these three groups nearly double the roster openings in DI &amp; DII combined.\u00a0 Moreover, these are accredited colleges with degrees to be\u00a0earned and, with the exception of\u00a0NCAA DIII schools, there are some substantial athletic scholarship dollars\u00a0available.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, what\u00a0are coaches thinking post-ESP?\u00a0\u00a0Hit the phones.\u00a0 Hit the roads.\u00a0 Hit the gyms.\u00a0 Whatever it\u00a0takes, these coaches, while they\u00a0have already compiled\u00a0their\u00a0top-20 or so wish lists for recruits, the ESP can change all that when certain attractive prospects fail to sign and fall through the cracks.\u00a0 The list \u00a0juggling\u00a0kicks up a notch or two and the wrangling\u00a0for the best\u00a0available\u00a0recruits begins.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These are the dog days of recruiting for college coaches.\u00a0 Their ears are constantly pressed to the ground trying to learn if this or that recruit has already signed, who&#8217;s still available, and if the\u00a0unsigned kids have come down to\u00a0Earth enough to now be open to the coach&#8217;s\u00a0advances.\u00a0 It&#8217;s all a big chess game with live-action figures in the form of unsigned high school seniors being carefully cajoled around the board.\u00a0 For coaches, if they are lucky, they will capture the king or queen.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s\u00a0career life and death for many coaches, so they go to sleep and wake up thinking about their next maneuver.\u00a0 Their livelihoods hang in the balance.\u00a0 Signing key prospects which could potentially\u00a0make <em>the<\/em> difference in their programs is paramount in their minds.\u00a0 One\u00a0special signee can carry their team for two\u00a0to four years and can\u00a0help the coach to reel in other higher caliber recruits.\u00a0 All it takes are a couple of excellent kids to turn their program from also-rans to contenders.\u00a0 And every coach knows\u00a0this.\u00a0\u00a0It&#8217;s just a matter of pulling it off.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Real Recruiting Work is Just Beginning for Most College Coaches Nearly all NCAA Division I and II\u00a0coaches have just completed the Early Signing Period (ESP).\u00a0 (A few sports must wait until 2011 for their one and only signing period to happen.)\u00a0 Some coaches are breathing easier because they&#8217;ve been fortunate enough to land all &#8230;
