\"\"<\/a>The Cam Newton recruiting mess instigated by former Mississippi State football player and erstwhile scout-agent Kenny Rogers demonstrates the need for parents to fully check out scouting services, and scouts, before signing representation contracts.\u00a0 It’s clear that Rogers not only blurred, but also intentionally crossed, the line between the role of\u00a0scouting service and professional agent.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 We can only speculate at Rogers’ motives, but the\u00a0real lesson to be gleaned from this unfortunate episode is that there are legitimate\u00a0scouting\u00a0companies\u00a0that honor the rules and guidelines set by the NCAA and it is incumbent upon parents to delineate the credible organizations from fly-by-night companies and attention-seeking agents masking as legit service providers.\u00a0 For instance, at NSR, in\u00a030 years of representing high school student-athletes, we have not once been called to the carpet for rules infractions.\u00a0\u00a0 When parents and\u00a0prospects\u00a0read about incidents like the\u00a0Newton-Rogers\u00a0debacle, they should\u00a0wake up to the fact that there are independent scouts\u00a0who work for personal gain, not for the prospects.\u00a0 At NSR, we help\u00a0kids and parents navigate the recruiting process, but there are specific things which we cannot, and do not,\u00a0do.\u00a0 We cannot accompany a prospect to a college campus.\u00a0 We cannot negotiate\u00a0scholarships\u00a0for our clients.\u00a0 We cannot reveal to one coach something\u00a0about\u00a0a prospect which we would not\u00a0reveal to all coaches.\u00a0\u00a0We cannot offer one prospect\u00a0our services for one fee\u00a0and then\u00a0discount or charge a different\u00a0amount\u00a0to another prospect for those very same services.\u00a0 At NSR, we run our business by\u00a0NCAA rules.\u00a0 Approaching\u00a0scouting and recruiting any other way is to\u00a0put a student-athlete’s eligibility at risk.\u00a0 We refuse to go that route.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
