“Athletic Character” Puts Many Prospects Over the Top<\/strong><\/p>\n

Competitive drive has to be proven to coaches.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Ask college coaches this: “Would you prefer a kid with talent lacking in desire over a less talented one with\u00a0an all-or-nothing approach?”\u00a0\u00a0Almost every coach will opt for the kid who will practice and play\u00a0hard every time they put on the uniform.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Talented\u00a0prospects that don’t seem to be\u00a0invested emotionally in practice and games are unlikely to change their habits and make a turnaround in college, suddenly transforming into the tenacious athlete they had the potential to become all along.\u00a0 It’s something ingrained in them.\u00a0 They may give lip service to it interviews, but the proof just isn\u2019t there on a daily basis.\u00a0 Sad, but true.<\/p>\n

Then there’s the kid with “heart.”\u00a0 With a modicum of talent, this kid gets to practice early, homes in on getting better every day, doesn’t get bummed out when beaten in one-on-one drills, runs out every sprint, and asks the coach how to improve.\u00a0 This is the\u00a0player who sits quietly on the bench as upperclassmen\u00a0take their turn playing.\u00a0 He listens well in practice and then works overtime to improve.\u00a0 It’s the kid who talks about the sport on Saturdays and Sundays, watches it more to learn than to enjoy, and then goes in the back yard and plays the sport of the season with neighborhood friends just for the fun of it.\u00a0 This is the kid who simply loves to compete and win.<\/p>\n

So, how can kids with heart prove it to coaches?\u00a0 You usually can’t clearly see it on video.\u00a0\u00a0You can say you have it, but who’s to say you are right?\u00a0 What do you do?\u00a0 Here some proof positive ways put your heart into play:<\/p>\n
