{"id":1600,"date":"2010-10-21T13:11:12","date_gmt":"2010-10-21T19:11:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/\/?p=1600"},"modified":"2010-10-21T13:11:12","modified_gmt":"2010-10-21T19:11:12","slug":"a-few-suggestions-for-ncaas-new-president-mark-emmert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/a-few-suggestions-for-ncaas-new-president-mark-emmert\/","title":{"rendered":"A Few Suggestions for NCAA&#8217;s New President, Mark Emmert"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1731\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1731\" style=\"width: 121px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mark-Emmert-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1731\" title=\"Mark Emmert 2\" src=\"\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mark-Emmert-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"131\" height=\"117\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1731\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here&#39;s hoping the newly appointed prez will grab the NCAA and shake it up some.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Improvements Are Possible if the NCAA Gets Out of Its Own Way<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been about a month since newly appointed <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/ncaa\/news\/story?id=5652520\">NCAA president Mark Emmert<\/a><\/strong> moved into his Indianapolis digs, but we haven&#8217;t heard a lot from Mark.\u00a0 Good for him.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s hope he&#8217;s hold up in the NCAA confines trying to\u00a0get a grip on what can comfortably be called one of the most powerful and complex organizations in the United States.\u00a0 So, while Dr. Emmert is settling in, we started wondering about things, you know, things like&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Division I football playoff system.<\/strong>\u00a0 Nearly everybody outside the NCAA wants the darn thing to happen except for the college presidents who are afraid they&#8217;ll lose a few dollars if all those meaningless bowls disappear.\u00a0 Instead, they opt for the guaranteed buck while the BCS does its annual &#8220;Let&#8217;s Irritate Half the People&#8221; dance.\u00a0\u00a0Help us\u00a0with this one, please, Mr. President.\u00a0 We need an FBS post-season championship tournament just like every other sport in your organization.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pro Agents and Advertisers.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0This\u00a0agent-thing has gotten out of hand.\u00a0 Okay, duh.\u00a0 Nevertheless, please\u00a0begin work immediately with the NFL, MLB, WNBA, NBA, NHL, or whomever, and\u00a0hammer down a litany of tough-as-nails rules which will scare the britches off the agents whose apparent function in life is to circumnavigate all the rules so they can make their three percent on a contract which may never be signed.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/sportsillustrated.cnn.com\/2010\/magazine\/10\/12\/agent\/index.html\">Sports Illustrated<\/a> recently published an intriguing article about the nefarious goings&#8217;-on and there is nothing in the story which indicates that agents are above board.\u00a0 Top-level, competitive college sports will be under a shadow until greedy agents are extricated from the process.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Performance Enhancing Drugs.<\/strong>\u00a0 Please ban all PED&#8217;s and supplements.\u00a0 Test all the athletes.\u00a0 One strike and you&#8217;re out for good.\u00a0 Done.\u00a0 No questions asked.\u00a0 Send a message that there really is such a thing as a no-tolerance position.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compensating Players.<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 However, please allow athletes to apply for no-interest loans from the college they attend to help with their documented expenses each month.\u00a0 If they graduate within seven years of initial enrollment, forgive the loans.\u00a0 Everybody wins.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Verbal\u00a0Offers.<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes,\u00a0but only beginning\u00a0at the start of the junior year\u00a0in high school, and only during unofficial visits.\u00a0 If you wait until the senior year, everybody in the process\u00a0will be pulling their hair out.\u00a0 And, tell coaches that they can&#8217;t make more verbal offers than they can actually fulfill.\u00a0 Kids can make only two verbal commitments prior to National Signing Day.\u00a0 All verbal offers should be signed to show intent on both parties, but not legally binding until the National Letter of Intent has been signed.\u00a0 No more making commitments to 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th graders.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Head Coaches That Cheat.\u00a0 <\/strong>We&#8217;re really tired of seeing these offending coaches moving on from one job to another without having to face significant consequences.\u00a0 So, if they knowingly break the rules while in charge of a program, don&#8217;t allow them to coach or teach at an NCAA-affiliated college for 10 years.\u00a0\u00a0 No appeals.\u00a0 That should do it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Discipline<\/strong>.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve had\u00a0it up to here\u00a0reading about student-athletes who beat up their\u00a0girlfriends, steal other students&#8217; property, fight with classmates,\u00a0drive drunk,\u00a0sell drugs, etc.\u00a0\u00a0Break the law (campus, community, state or federal) and you&#8217;re done, over, kaput.\u00a0 And, that should be written into the NLI so that there are no surprises or question\u00a0about the consequences when it happens.\u00a0\u00a0To add some bite to\u00a0it, get the professional leagues to agree not to draft any\u00a0of these offenders until they would have graduated college had they\u00a0remained in school all four years.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Really, Dr. Emmert, let&#8217;s get tough with presidents on the playoff thing and tougher with the bad guys who soil college sports, well, because they can.\u00a0 We&#8217;re behind a concerted effort to tie up the loose ends which continually snag the public&#8217;s attention.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Improvements Are Possible if the NCAA Gets Out of Its Own Way It&#8217;s been about a month since newly appointed NCAA president Mark Emmert moved into his Indianapolis digs, but we haven&#8217;t heard a lot from Mark.\u00a0 Good for him.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s hope he&#8217;s hold up in the NCAA confines trying to\u00a0get a grip on what &#8230;
