Illinois Women’s Volleyball Team<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>NSR<\/strong>‘s #1 Cool Award<\/strong> this week goes to then-9th-ranked Illinois<\/a> women’s volleyball squad which took on the much taller and ballyhooed\u00a0#2 Penn State<\/a> Friday night and won 3-2.\u00a0 Granted, they faced\u00a0off in front of a\u00a0packed\u00a0house of 4,141 screaming Illini fans in Champaign, which certainly helped, but the Nittany Lions have practically owned women’s college volleyball for the past three years, including the systematic dismantling of every team in the Big Ten<\/a>\u00a0en route to\u00a0a remarkable 65-match winning streak.\u00a0 Even so, the women in orange and blue\u00a0got it done in five games, 17-25, 25-14, 25-19, 14-25, 17-15.\u00a0\u00a0 Very cool, ladies.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>Our #2 Cool Award<\/strong> is handed out to Stanford University<\/a><\/strong> linebacker and fullback Owen Marecic<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 That’s right, Owen is the only\u00a0NCAA<\/a><\/strong> DI\u00a0football player\u00a0who not only goes both\u00a0ways for the Cardinal, but he starts\u00a0at both positions.\u00a0 Dubbed by Sports Illustrated as “The Perfect Player,”<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 he\u00a0 showed his overall prowess this past weekend by scoring two touchdowns against Notre Dame<\/a> within 13 seconds of play, one as a fullback pushing the ball over the goal line on a dive play then intercepting an Irish pass two plays later and returning it for a score.\u00a0 A throw-back to much earlier gridiron days, we have to wonder why this outstanding student-athlete, who carries a 3.7 GPA is not high on the Heisman<\/a> watch lists?\u00a0 In any case, very cool, Mr. Marecic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
