{"id":13833,"date":"2017-03-27T04:30:58","date_gmt":"2017-03-27T09:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/?p=13833"},"modified":"2017-03-26T23:30:00","modified_gmt":"2017-03-27T04:30:00","slug":"earning-an-athletic-scholarship-is-much-like-march-madness-for-high-school-athletes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/earning-an-athletic-scholarship-is-much-like-march-madness-for-high-school-athletes\/","title":{"rendered":"Earning an Athletic Scholarship is Much like March Madness for High School Athletes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earning a college scholarship and March Madness have a lot in common.<\/p>\n<p>Over their high school careers, athletes face recruiting opponents every day. \u00a0Many have no clue it&#8217;s going on but in fact, on the first day of their freshman year, athletes&#8217; personal recruiting tournaments begin. \u00a0See, athletes known to college coaches are in a March Madness-type, compete-and-advance scenario.<\/p>\n<p>The difference? \u00a0Earning an athletic scholarship lasts four years instead of four weeks.<\/p>\n<p>College coaches do not wait until prospects are juniors or seniors to initiate the recruiting process. \u00a0Coaches hit the &#8220;go&#8221; button as soon as they get wind of a prospect that potentially fits their programs&#8217; needs. \u00a0And then, for those lucky prospects, knowingly or otherwise, it&#8217;s tournament time where you win or go home empty-handed.<\/p>\n<p>In the minds of college coaches, every prospect they ID is competing for the scholarship dollars they will have available when that prospect graduates high school. \u00a0One wrong move and a prospect faces elimination. \u00a0A good performance, say, a prospect reports really good test scores\u00a0or has a terrific showcase, and he or she advances.<\/p>\n<p>It really is a survival of the fittest, or in recruiting, the most qualified. \u00a0Do well, you move to the next round. \u00a0Trip up, and you lose out.<\/p>\n<p>Every day counts in a prospect&#8217;s recruiting tournament. \u00a0Whether in the classroom, during practice or in a game, match or meet, prospects are closely scrutinized by college coaches. \u00a0Grades, attitude, work ethic, stats, leadership, they all matter when coaches are choosing to hand over thousands of dollars from their college to a high school senior.<\/p>\n<p>The awarding of scholarships is a value-based system. \u00a0Administrators and athletic directors are continuously gauging if their coaches and athletes are bringing value to their campuses? \u00a0Scholarships are highly-entrusted money and schools do not dole them out lightly. \u00a0Great responsibility comes with presenting final offers to athletes. \u00a0Coaches know this and are ever diligent when narrowing down which prospects deserve these &#8220;gifts&#8221; over others.<\/p>\n<p>Hard choices? \u00a0Absolutely. \u00a0It&#8217;s not just the wins and losses that matter to many colleges anymore. \u00a0Coaches&#8217; on-campus reputations and jobs are on the line, too. \u00a0Graduation rates, retention of solid students, and producing great alumni are all contributing factors to college coaches&#8217; longevities.<\/p>\n<p>For prospects, holding back is not an option. \u00a0And only those individuals that place themselves in the best positions, and take full advantage of their opportunities, are the athletes that have a chance to go through all the rounds and emerge with offers. \u00a0It is truly a win-every-day challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Prospects and parents, imagine the hard work and preparation coaches and players must put into their next game during the NCAA basketball tournament. \u00a0Imagine, too, what would happen if they sat back and merely let the game start without making a plan and putting in the work to win. \u00a0Their probabilities of advancing would be very low, if not non-existent.<\/p>\n<p>High school athletes with the goal to earn athletic scholarships are in the same situation. \u00a0Think about it. \u00a0Are you in the best position to advance? \u00a0If not, do something about it today. \u00a0Gain the advantage. \u00a0Contact the NSR scout near you and find out how to win your recruiting tournament.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earning a college scholarship and March Madness have a lot in common.
