It is a given that coaches step up their game when communicating with high school prospects and during campus visits, particularly on official visits. From the athletic facilities to the locker rooms to the dorms and dining halls, everything is orchestrated to emphasize the very best the coach and school offer. \u00a0It&#8217;s true that you attract more bees with honey.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Behind\u00a0what college coaches don&#8217;t say<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>College recruiting competition is fierce and intense. \u00a0Coaches, accustomed to scrums for top athletes, somehow still maintain\u00a0friendships\u00a0with most rival colleagues. \u00a0They know that all coaches have roster quotas to fill, their schools&#8217; standards to uphold, and that their jobs are on the line. \u00a0It follows then that the underlying pressures are palpable.<\/p>\n<p>Everything is not revealed, that is, college coaches don&#8217;t say everything during the recruiting process.\u00a0 The day-to-day grind of college athletics is usually glossed over.\u00a0 And the change which inevitably occurs in coach-player relationships can never be fully explained leading up to signings.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A reality check<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Once <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalletter.org\/\">NLI<\/a>s have been signed, prospects enter\u00a0an alternate universe.\u00a0Reality sets in when newbies enroll in school, get settled and walk into their first team meeting. \u00a0The lives they previously knew no longer exist. It&#8217;s now down to business, so get used to it, kiddos.<\/p>\n<p>When players work hard and do the right things &#8211; go to classes and arrive on time for practices &#8211; coaches typically reward them with respect and freedom. \u00a0When athletes fail to uphold their end of the deal, however, coaches can make life hard with added study halls, bed checks and chats with professors.<\/p>\n<p>The responsibility to coaches, team, and school may be touched on during recruiting, but it\u2019s rarely discussed in depth. \u00a0But make no mistake, upon arrival, it is there and expected of each new signee.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Five things to know<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>To that, here are the five things college coaches don&#8217;t say during recruiting:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>I am not your friend. <\/strong>Once you step foot on my campus, you are mine. \u00a0Get used to it. \u00a0I&#8217;m not your mama, bud or BFF. \u00a0If you need me, you know where to find me.\u00a0 Be a responsible adult and we will get along fine.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Welcome to my world. \u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0There are no gray areas and there is no debate. \u00a0Rule #1? \u00a0Never be late &#8211; practice, game, study hall, class or bed check. We are in this together, but I am the boss.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Screw your head on straight and tight.<\/strong>\u00a0 Get ready &#8211; you will work harder than you ever thought possible. \u00a0Mistakes? \u00a0Not a fan.\u00a0 Every day, whether in the classroom or when putting on the uniform, the people around you from professors to peers put you on a pedestal.\u00a0 Earn their respect.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nothing you did before matters.<\/strong>\u00a0 Leave your trophies at home. \u00a0They may have been partially responsible for getting you here, but they cannot keep you here, provide you with playing time, or make excuses for you.\u00a0 Listen, learn, do. \u00a0Repeat, repeat, repeat.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Never embarrass me or the school.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Want to lose my trust, respect and your scholarship, then lose sight of why you are here \u2013 to get an education, to help our team succeed and to represent our school with pride.\u00a0 Everything is connected.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It&#8217;s an honor to be a college student-athlete! It&#8217;s also a full-time job. Be ready to go to work.
