It’s the highest team honor an Ole Miss player can receive.

Mullins was an undersized defensive back from North Alabama who went on to become an inspirational team leader at Ole Miss. Not only was he a great football player, but he was also a fantastic person to whom everyone migrated. He loved his school, team and teammates. He was what embodied the student-athlete at Ole Miss.

Many college football fans may recall Mullins’ tragic spinal injury on Oct. 28, 1989, during the Ole Miss homecoming game against Vanderbilt. His indomitable spirit and influence on the Oxford, Miss., campus continues to this day.

When Mullins returned to Oxford in August 1990 to begin living in a specially-equipped house built by Ole Miss Trust Fund donations, he was determined to return to school and pursue a degree. Against all odds, he did return to the classroom in January 1991. However, four months later, Mullins suddenly stopped breathing as he prepared for class. Rushed to the hospital, he never regained consciousness and died five days later from complications resulting from a blood clot.

This past year, Youngblood faced his own personal tragedy. His biggest fan, his father Phil, passed away suddenly. Youngblood could have folded his tent and given up on his athletic goals, but instead he pushed harder than ever in the spring and summer. He fought through the loss and let the team and school be his place of peace.

A former standout at Hewitt-Trussville High School in Alabama, Youngblood was discovered and scouted by National Scouting Report Area Director Robert Cagle. He needed Cagle and National Scouting Report to assist him and his family with the college recruiting process.

Since signing with Ole Miss, Youngblood has become a fixture on the Rebels’ vaunted “Land Shark” defense, playing in every game the past two seasons.

NSR congratulates Youngblood on this accomplishment. We are honored to have played a role in his success and look forward to watching him in his final collegiate season.

PICKS FOR YOU

5 Bad Habits That Can Turn Off College Coaches

3 Mistakes No High School Athlete Can Afford To Make

Warning: Parents Should Not Play Waiting Game

Top 5 Reasons Athletes Are Under-Recruited

Former National Scouting Report football prospect John Youngblood was recently awarded the 2016 Chucky Mullins Courage Award at the University of Mississippi.
