Playing for the Tri-State Arsenal 13U Prime, composed of some of the best young players from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Delaware, the highly talented leadoff hitter went 10-for-17 (.588 average) with seven doubles and two triples in six games at the recent Perfect Game World Series in Georgia.

That’s nothing out of the ordinary for Matt, who batted nearly .500 for the Arsenal during the 2016 spring-summer season. On top of that, he made just two errors all season at second base. He also plays shortstop and center field.

“I’m really proud of him,” his father, Mike, said. “He works really hard. It shows on and off the field.”

Matt is establishing quite an impressive athletic resume. Last summer, he helped two AAU teams — South Jersey Sand Sharks and BC Brushback Elite – capture 12U championships at Cooperstown Dreams Park, near the Baseball Hall of Fame in New York. He also will be participating in the USSSA Southeast Region Select 30 Prospect Camp in September in Marietta, Ga., and the Power Showcase Future Stars in November at Texas Stadium.

His academic resume is equally impressive. Matt boasted a perfect 4.0 grade-point average during his three years at Carl Sandburg Middle School and plans to take all AP and honors classes during his freshman year at Neshaminy High School in suburban Philadelphia.

Come next spring, Matt will try out for high school baseball. At which level he will play as a freshman is still to be determined.

“He will play freshman, JV or varsity,” Mike said matter-of-factly. “I’m not going to say my son deserves to play at a certain level. Whatever the coaches think, so be it.”

However, Matt hopes to play at the highest level possible – just like he always has – and will work hard to do it.

“He’s trying to stay ahead of the curve,” Mike said. “He’s very mechanically sound. Some kids are bigger and stronger, but we think mechanics are very important to stay ahead of the curve.”

Matt’s ultimate goal is to play college baseball.

“I would consider any college that would allow me to play baseball,” he wrote in his NSR personal message to college coaches. “I would always give 100-percent effort in practice and games. I would be a good teammate. I would try to be a leader on the field and communicate well with everyone.

“I am willing to accept constructive criticism, so I can be the best in all aspects of the game. I will never be totally satisfied with my play and will always try to improve.”

Call him “Matt the Bat.” Matt Yauger, a 2020 National Scouting Report baseball prospect from Levittown, PA, has been turning heads with his play against some of the top competition in the country.
