College coaches have a breaking point in recruiting. Parents and prospects must carefully gauge\u00a0where that is.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

College coaches should not be toyed with by parents and prospects.<\/p>\n

Yes, there are some appropriate things parents\u00a0can do and\/or\u00a0request from coaches, but\u00a0every coach has a limit. \u00a0Not knowing that particular point of no return can result in a coach backing off indefinitely if it is crossed.<\/p>\n

Recruiting can be going smoothly. A coach is being very accommodating. Then a parent or athlete asks what appears to be a harmless question, say, about an added benefit such as a specific dorm, and the next thing you know, the coach vanishes, never to be heard from again. Oh, and that scholarship offer is gone, too.<\/p>\n

It happens.<\/p>\n

How do you know how far you can go? Being sensible usually works.<\/p>\n

Coaches normally don’t mind doing something a little extra for the prospects at the top of their white boards if it is within the recruiting rules. But coaches also know the rest of the team will know immediately if a new recruit is being treated differently. And most athletes already in the program and paying their dues don’t look too favorably on favoritism.<\/p>\n

Then there’s the “camel’s back” thing. Every coach has a “one-too-many-straws” breaking point. \u00a0For parents unknowingly carrying that straw\u00a0and carelessly tossing it on the coach, the rejection can be startling as well as devastating.<\/p>\n
