Since January, he has been scouting high school players for National Scouting Report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just love the game,\u201d said Gossner, 62, an NSR baseball scout in Southeastern Pennsylvania and South Jersey. \u201cI wanted to stay in baseball, and scouting keeps me in the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10836\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10836\" style=\"width: 283px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/gossner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-10836 \" src=\"\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/gossner-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"NSR scout Mike Gossner is also an associate scout for the Baltimore Orioles.\" width=\"293\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/gossner-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/gossner.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10836\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mike Gossner, an NSR baseball scout in Southeastern PA and South Jersey, is also an associate scout for the Baltimore Orioles.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Gossner, a longtime coach and former player, was knee deep in pro scouting leading up to last week\u2019s First-Year Player Draft. An associate scout for the Orioles, he wasn\u2019t involved in the selection of players, but was instrumental in evaluating prospects before the draft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy role is to scout prospects in our area,\u201d said Gossner, whose Orioles&#8217; territory includes Eastern Pennsylvania, South Jersey and parts of Delaware. \u201cIf I think they are professional prospects, I pass the information on to the regional scout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gossner assumed the same role &#8212; on a lower level &#8212; with NSR. Sometimes he plays both roles at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI use the same method of scouting with NSR as I do with the Orioles,\u201d he said. \u201cThe beauty of scouting for NSR is that there are quite a few [college] levels that these young people can play at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NSR scouting is quite rewarding, Gossner said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeing a young person live out their dream of playing college baseball is more exciting to me than watching a young man make the pros,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>A former baseball player at Neshaminy High School and Bucks County Community College in the Philadelphia suburbs, Gossner has coached youth, American Legion, high school and college baseball for more than 30 years. He is the franchise owner of the Philly Bandits, a nationally known AAU program for 14U, 16U, 17U and 22U players. He is also vice president of the All American Amateur Baseball Association (AAABA) and Eastern PA state director of the Continental Amateur Baseball Association (CABA).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was an OK player,\u201d said Gossner, a former middle infielder. \u201cHowever, I am a much better talent evaluator. I\u2019ve always had an eye for talent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, he is using that eye to evaluate high school talent for NSR.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish I would have done this 10 years ago,\u201d he said. \u201cI really enjoy helping a young person understand the [recruiting] process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gossner has been scouting baseball exclusively for NSR. Soon he plans to cross over into softball and also may add soccer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy goal is to become a full-time NSR scout,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s what I really want to do.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Baseball scouting is in Mike Gossner\u2019s blood.
