Although the school has a stellar academic reputation, sports are not always on the radar when speaking of Virginia private school powerhouses.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, that\u00a0is where 2017 National Scouting Report softball prospect <a href=\"https:\/\/evo.nsr-inc.com\/#\/prospect_detail?prospect_id=202165\">Katie Haney<\/a> makes her daily commute\u00a0from her family&#8217;s home in Burkeville, about 20 minutes away.<\/p>\n<p>A 5-foot-10, 150-pound junior shortstop, Haney\u00a0is the living embodiment of what coaches <em>really<\/em> mean when they use the word student-athlete. Not only is she a\u00a0three-sport standout, she also sports a 3.7 GPA. Besides being a two-time All-State selection in softball, Haney runs\u00a0cross country and is captain of the basketball team.<\/p>\n<p>Haney plays summer travel softball for the\u00a0Vienna Stars 18U Gold based in Northern Virginia. \u00a0In her spare\u00a0time &#8212; what little of it there is &#8212; she does\u00a0volunteer work at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbyra.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Crewe-Burkeville Youth Recreation Center<\/a>\u00a0to &#8220;take pride in teaching the young girls to love and respect the game as much as I do,&#8221; she said,<\/p>\n<p>Haney&#8217;s primary position is shortstop, but she also can play third base and outfield. \u00a0At the plate, she can hit for power, but her true strength is putting the ball in play. She led the state in hitting this year with a .659 batting average.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/college-scouts\/126\/jim-simpson\">Jim Simpson<\/a>, NSR area director of scouting in Virginia, can&#8217;t say enough about her.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She&#8217;s a really good kid, a two-time All-State shortstop, and she already has offers from a number of Division I schools,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>But that&#8217;s just for starters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Katie really is an incredible young talent and lady you\u2019ll be proud to have,&#8221; Simpson wrote in his scouting report to college coaches. &#8220;&#8230; Katie is working really hard to hone in on that perfect D-I opportunity that will allow her to take her studies to the next level also. She\u2019s being very careful to include her academic goals along with her athletic ones. She continues to build a resume tha<span class=\"text_exposed_show\">t already includes stellar test scores, but Katie says she can do better. \u00a0She loves the D-I option but remains open to a competitive program that works for the family, for Katie and provides that sweet-spot combination of both academics and athletics.<\/span>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Haney remains focused on both.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since the beginning of my high school career,&#8221; she said, &#8220;my goal has always been to attend a top academic college with one of the country\u2019s best softball programs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>College coaches usually don&#8217;t flock to Farmville, Va.
