{"id":1053,"date":"2010-08-26T07:05:00","date_gmt":"2010-08-26T13:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/\/?p=1053"},"modified":"2010-08-26T07:05:00","modified_gmt":"2010-08-26T13:05:00","slug":"ncaa-summer-school-proposal-makes-good-sense","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsr-inc.com\/scouting-news\/ncaa-summer-school-proposal-makes-good-sense\/","title":{"rendered":"NCAA Summer School Proposal Makes Good Sense"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>One of Three Major Problems Being Scrutinized<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1055\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1055\" style=\"width: 100px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/NCAA-logo2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1055\" title=\"NCAA logo\" src=\"\/\/blog.nsr-inc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/NCAA-logo2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"110\" height=\"110\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1055\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The NCAA is going after three major topics of concern with changes expected soon.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong><a href=\"www.ncaa.org\">NCAA<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s upcoming proposal which, if adopted, will\u00a0dictate that Division I institutions delve deeper into incoming student-athletes&#8217; academic records and require poorer students in football and basketball (men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s) to take summer school classes prior to full-time enrollment.\u00a0 At <strong>NSR<\/strong>, we support this proposal as a positive step by the NCAA on behalf of student-athletes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The measure would force colleges to get more proactively involved with the student-athlete population on the front end of their college experience.\u00a0 This has been missing, to a degree, and needed correcting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As things currently stand, 0nce approved for admittance, most freshmen and transfer students are put on the fast track to college life, or so it seems.\u00a0 With\u00a0various and sundry\u00a0issues at hand,\u00a0not the least of which is the <strong><a href=\"www.ncaa.org\/wps\/ncaa?ContentID=49714\">NCAA&#8217;s\u00a0Academic Progress Rate (APR)<\/a><\/strong>, which penalizes athletic programs for\u00a0those athletes who do not take\u00a0specific steps toward\u00a0earning a degree, the new rule makes perfect sense.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, it calls for academically at-risk freshmen and transfer student-athletes to take nine hours and pass six before being permitted to take on a full load of classes in the fall.\u00a0 The plan has the\u00a0expectations of helping borderline students to get a head start on meeting NCAA academic guidelines which, again,\u00a0call for student-athletes\u00a0to make progress toward earning a college degree throughout their college, athletic careers.\u00a0 It is also believed that\u00a0the\u00a0new rule will help freshmen and transfers to become more acclimated to college campuses, their coaches and the academic settings of their\u00a0schools.\u00a0\u00a0A pilot program run by the University of North Carolina at Asheville has proven to successfu.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We believe that\u00a0this\u00a0proposal addresses an endemic problem, one\u00a0which too frequently derails newcomers&#8217; academic foundations.\u00a0\u00a0This proactive approach should save a number of &#8220;bubble&#8221; athletes whose academic history demonstrates the potential need for intervention, guidelines and personal guidance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But, for all the recognizable good news, there&#8217;s bad news, too, depending on the perspective, of course.\u00a0 For DI coaches, this tactic could serve as an early wash out of some\u00a0recruits ill-fitted for\u00a0college academics prior to becoming\u00a0their being established as full-time students.\u00a0\u00a0If that occurs, the coach&#8217;s APR would not presumably be effected as opposed to their flunking out after their full-time enrollment status begins.<\/p>\n<p>Football and basketball at the Division I level have recently come under scrutiny from all sides.\u00a0 Improper agent activities are being discussed by pertinent parties and agencies.\u00a0 Men&#8217;s basketball&#8217;s one-and-done rule will apparently be reconsidered under NCAA&#8217;s new president, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncaa.org\/wps\/portal\/ncaahome?WCM_GLOBAL_CONTEXT=\/ncaa\/ncaa\/ncaa+news\/ncaa+news+online\/2010\/association-wide\/mark+emmert+selected+as+ncaa+president+ncaa+news+04_27_10\">Dr. Mark Emmert<\/a><\/strong>, that is if he can convince the <strong><a href=\"www.nba.com\/ \">NBA<\/a><\/strong> to shift their current policy.\u00a0 And, now this.\u00a0 It is likely that we\u00a0can anticipate a number of rules changes in all these categories\u00a0in the near future.\u00a0 From our side, those changes cannot come soon enough.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of Three Major Problems Being Scrutinized The\u00a0NCAA&#8216;s upcoming proposal which, if adopted, will\u00a0dictate that Division I institutions delve deeper into incoming student-athletes&#8217;
