Clemson commit Lexie Dorminy was the SCISA POY last fall.
Clemson commit Lexie Dorminy was the 2015 SCISA player of the year.

Seldom does a day go by that someone does not ask a National Scouting Report scout what it takes to be an NCAA Division I prospect.  The next time somebody poses that question to me, I will simply say: Go watch Lexie Dorminy, who recently committed to play volleyball for Clemson University.

Over the years with NSR, I have seen a lot of volleyball middles come through.  So, when I learned about Dorminy, a 2017 prospect from Porter-Gaud School in Charleston, S.C., I went to her NSR site to view her video.

Was I expecting something extraordinary? No. Was I wrong?  Yes.

Power is an overused word in sports, but not in Lexie’s case. At 6 feet 1, she is one of the most powerful high school middle hitters I have ever seen. Her kills often are inside the 10-foot line, meaning she has to get some serious air and perfectly time her hits. She does those things consistently.

Last fall, Lexie helped lead her Porter-Gaud team to a state championship. Her statistics were staggering: 128 sets, 394 kills, .405 hitting percentage, 45 aces, 35 solo blocks, 105 blocking assists and two blocking errors. Few middles anywhere can post those types of numbers. What’s more, Lexie was named South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) player of the year.

Dorminy is a front row force with the skills to block and place kills at the 10-foot line.

“My leadership skills are what set me apart from everyone else,” Lexie wrote in her personal message to college coaches. “On every team I have been on. from 7th grade until now, I have been the one to step up to the plate and lead, whether it be from a mental, emotional or physical standpoint. Some coaches I have had call it my “X-factor”, though it is just my personality. I make good decisions both on and off the court that will only help me achieve my goals.”

Lexie also credits her success to her work ethic.

“The first coach I ever had continued to tell me, ‘Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard,”’ she wrote. “This quote has really stuck with me throughout the years and reminds me that, no matter the situation, I should always give it my all. Playing at the collegiate level has been a goal of mine for a long time and if given the opportunity I will commit to giving my teammates, my coach and my schoolwork my best effort and all that I can provide.”

NSR scout Jonathan Rose couldn’t say enough about his prize recruit:

“Lexie’s drive is what sets her apart from the other players,” he wrote in his NSR scouting report. “Watching her in games, you can see the fire in her eyes wanting to win. She is quick on her feet, getting to every ball. Good at transitioning, and always back and jumping ready for the quick set. She does not let outside distraction deter her from her goals. She has been dreaming of the day to play in college. Working with trainers, early morning workouts, and constantly looking for ways to grow. She understands that it takes more than talent to get where she wants to go.”
