National Scouting Report baseball prospect  Tyler Conklin stands 6-foot-6 with a 4.1 GPA.

Think that catches the eyes of college coaches? You bet.

However, Tyler’s best attribute is his desire to achieve the best on the diamond and in the classroom.

“I have been studying baseball ever since I can remember and coaches say my baseball IQ is very high,” said Tyler, a rising senior pitcher/shortstop at Greenville (N.C.) Christian Academy. “Baseball is not my only talent. I am also academically driven. I take every honors and AP classes that are available to prepare me for college. I am also dual-enrolled in the local community college, where I have already established college credits.”

When NSR scouts discover high-quality prospects like Tyler, they are often as impressed with their character as their athletic abilities. Tyler is especially attractive to college coaches because of his deep devotion to academics, sports and faith.

“More than my academics and athletics, I am a Christian and I take my faith seriously,” Tyler wrote in his personal message to college coaches. “I attend church often throughout the week and I study the Bible daily. I work very hard whether it comes to baseball, academics, or my spiritual life. I strive for excellence on a daily basis and I have a strong competitive desire to win and succeed.”

Tyler was discovered by NSR area scout Ben Sanderson, who thinks he has a bright future in college baseball.

“Tyler already fills out his uniform well and projects to develop into a really physical player both on the infield and on the mound,” Sanderson wrote in his scouting report to college coaches. “At shortstop, Tyler has tremendous game awareness and leadership abilities. With an above-average high school arm, he projects to be able to stay on the left side at the next level. Offensively, with an athletic, high-hands setup, Tyler is loose and balanced in the box with very good bat speed and plate discipline. He is already capable of driving the baseball with authority and will only continue to develop more power as he grows.”
