At 5 feet 10 and growing, freshman Kerrigan Gamm is an imposing figure in the field and at the plate.

It takes a special athlete to impress National Scouting Report scouts. Like college coaches, they must weed out lots of pretenders and wannabe prospects to find the ones who really have all the tools to be legitimate college recruits.

Jason Marcum is an NSR scout who works throughout Missouri.  He has more than a few softball games under his belt, so to turn his head, a prospect has to bring a lot to the table. Besides athleticism, position and hitting skills, a prospect needs really good grades, a strong work ethic and high character.  That’s a lot to ask of youngsters, but those are the traits college coaches seek.

When Marcum first saw Kerrigan Gamm, a 2019 prospect from School of Osage in Osage Beach, Mo., he knew instantly he had found the real deal.  In fact, in his scouting report to college coaches, Marcum boldly raised Gamm to a very lofty level by writing: “2019 C/UT Kerrigan “KG” Gamm is a VERY RARE student-athlete. At 5 feet 10 and 146 pounds, her body is cut out already, and her frame will hold more muscle. She is the best 2019 catcher I have scouted in MO! KG possesses ‘IT.'”

Gamm’s stats are, indeed, quite impressive.

In the past three years of high school and travel ball, Gamm has yet to hit lower than .464. Behind the plate, she posted a near super-human pop time of 1.7 at the prestigious Mizzou Elite Camp. On top of that, she had a release speed of 65 MPH.

In 2015 fall high school ball, Gamm boasted a .527 OBP and a .797 SLG%.  Last year, in spring and summer travel ball, she hit .491 with an OBP of .509, a SLG% of .657, drove in 33 runs and stole 14 bases.  The previous fall she hit .451.

“Kerrigan is versatile and athletic enough to easily move to any infield (usually shortstop) or outfield position without degradation,” Marcum wrote. “At the plate, she is a solid gap hitter with developing power (71 MHP exit speed) to all fields.  She will hit for a high average, is disciplined and can run the bases effectively.”

Marcum also describes Gamm as very humble. “She is one of the nicest young people you will meet,” he wrote. “Her friends, classmates and teachers will attest to that, too.”

An honor roll student and member of the National Junior Honor Society, Gamm does a great job of balancing academics with athletics. She was elected Freshman Student Council President, a National Junior Honors Society Officer and received an Award of Academic Excellence in Math.

“I am a leader both on and off the softball field,” Gamm wrote in her personal message to college coaches. “I have been a team captain for both my softball and basketball teams for the past four years. I am goal-oriented and not afraid of hard work. I stay dedicated to my goals both in sports and in the classroom with a 4.0 GPA.  My coaches and teammates would say that I have a great attitude, am coachable, and set the bar high for others to follow.

“I have a quote from Michael Jordan that hangs on my bedroom mirror: ‘I’ve failed over and over and over again and that is why I succeed.’ Softball and life are games of failure. It is my goal to learn from these challenges in order to better myself as a student and athlete, and this is what sets me apart from other players.”
