The American Football Coaches Association hosts a national convention every year with the goal to improve football coaches through education, interaction, and networking. This convention is one of the largest networking events for college football, with more than 6000 coaches attending the four-day event every second week in January. This year, like every year, National Scouting Report was in attendance with some of our most recognized football scouting staff. Those guys include Santo Stephens, JaminElliot, Kevin O’Donnell, Larry Perrin, Leroy Harris, Dennis Winston, Marty Hurney and Robert Cagle. Altogether these scouts have over 50 years of football experience between playing, coaching, and scouting.

Santo Stephens

He played in the NFL as a linebacker for five years with the Jaguars, Bengals, and Chiefs. During his time at NSR Stephens has been the area director of scouting and now is the director of football scouting.

Jamin Elliott
Elliot played college football at the University of Delaware as a wide receiver and a triple jumper on the track and field squad. He helped lead the Blue Hens to multiple conference championships in football and track. He was selected in the sixth round of the NFL draft by the Chicago Bears in 2002 and later earned a Super Bowl ring with the New England Patriots in 2003. He also played professionally with the NFL Atlanta Falcons, the Cologne Centurions of NFL Europe, and with the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League.

Kevin O’Donnell
O’Donnell is a proud veteran and serves for the United States of America as a Traditional Guardsman. In his collegiate career, he played soccer for the Georgia Southern University. Now he is a strength and conditioning trainer and serves as a scout for the South Georgia region of the United States.

Larry Perrin
Perrin attended Henderson State University in 1981-1984. During his career, he played receiver, punter, and kicker. To this day Perrin is still listed in the Henderson State University record books in the top 5 all-time for the recording the longest punt and field goal in school history. Now, Perrin is the director of expansion and development for NSR.

Leroy Harris
In college, Harris was a two-sport athlete competing in football and wrestling at North Carolina State University. Upon his graduation, Harris was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the 4th round of the 2007 NFL draft. He played in the league as an offensive lineman for seven years, six with the Titans and one with the Detroit Lions. Currently, Harris is the Tennessee area director of scouting and is a high school wrestling coach.

Marty Hurney
Hurney is the former General Manager of the Carolina Panthers. He and his staff were responsible for drafting many key players like Cam Newton. Before his stint with the Panthers, Hurney worked in a public relations role for the Washington Redskins and in the front office for the San Diego Chargers. Now, Hurney is the football scout for the Carolina area.

Robert Cagle
In college, Cagle was a lineman for The University of Mississippi where he a part of the ALL-SEC Academic team in 1987 and 1988. Before joining the NSR team in 2008, Cagle was an Alabama high school football coach. Currently, he serves as the Vice President of public relations, marketing, and media for NSR.

Dennis “Dirt” Winston
Winston is a former University of Arkansas linebacker and was a part of the 2014 induction class to the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame. In 1977 Winston was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers and played there for seven seasons and the New Orleans Saints for four seasons. With the Steelers he competed in Super Bowl XIII and XIV. Winston also coached college football at the University of Toledo, Grambling State and Eastern Illinois University to name a few.

The name of the game in football is who you know, and after taking a look at just a few of our football scouts, it’s evident our scouts are in the know. However, we also know that you can never have too many connections. So it’s our job to mingle and expand our coaches network when we can, and the AFCA convention was the perfect place.
