Parents of college prospects can be stubborn, and most think they can help their athletes through the recruiting process on their own. The recruiting process isn’t easy, and DIY recruiting sounds easy but it takes a lot for it to work for your athlete.

When a National Scouting Report scout contacts you, you should pay attention. It may be your only chance to widely and more effectively promote and connect your athlete to college coaches.

NSR scouts only approach prospects who are legitimate college prospects. Yes, the occasional bubble athlete falls through the cracks, but that is usually because he or she is an excellent student or individual with slightly below average athletic skills. We think those kids — the ones who work hard every day and produce in the classroom — are strong bets to be recruited by college coaches needing the kind of character and work ethic they can bring to their teams.

For the most part, though, NSR scouts go after really good kids who are solid athletes and outstanding students. It’s a formula that has proven to work for more than 36 years. Most parents are blind to the ancillary things that result in scholarship offers. They are the ones who make the bad decision of trying to promote their children to college coaches.

The problem? Shortsighted parents who are accustomed to taking shortcuts think they can take yet another one to a scholarship offer. They are very few rewarded for turning a blind eye to the NSR opportunity. Unfortunately, their children are the ones who suffer from the DIY (Do It Yourself) decision.

Here are six reasons why the DIY Recruiting method typically doesn’t work:

  1. Most parents have no clue what to send college coaches.
  2. Some parents have no idea how much to send coaches.
  3. Often parents don’t know when they should send info to coaches.
  4. Parents aren’t usually organized in their overall plan.
  5. Parents do not have a reliable source to guide them through the recruiting process.
  6. Usually, parents do not know how to produce video college coaches need.

The next time an NSR scout asks about your athlete, know that you are talking to a recruiting professional. Have a conversation. Learn how NSR can expedite the promotional process for your child. Understand that what you think you can do has a high probability of failing.

Then make the right decision for your athlete.
