Parents of college prospects have some weird, baked-in assumptions about recruiting.

Some are founded on just enough info to steer them in the wrong direction. That is so dangerous when a child’s future is at stake.

Some are really outdated to the point of making somebody in the recruiting business, such as a National Scouting Report scout, say, “What?”

To help those in need, we have identified four half-baked ideas parents have about the college recruiting process:

  1. “We need to stay within two hours of home.”  If you look at college rosters, most coaches tend to recruit and sign prospects out of their area, not within it.  Yes, there are exceptions, but not all that many.
  2. “We know a guy who knows a guy.” Good for you. The problem is only about one in a thousand of these connections ends up getting a kid a scholarship offer. College coaches don’t like having athletes pushed on them by a family friend. Wish there were better news, but there isn’t.
  3. “Our kid has gone to that coach’s camp for five years, so we have an in.” Maybe so, but probably not. Camps are used to supplement coaches’ pay more than anything else. Few end up being fertile recruiting ground.
  4. “We’re going to wait to see what happens.” Ouch. There is no worse recruiting decision parents can make than waiting. Your child is either competing for a scholarship offer or not.  Waiting means he or she is not.

NSR scouts soon will be inundated by the parents of senior student-athletes. Some of those prospects can be helped. Others can’t.

The ones we can help are at a serious disadvantage because they are forced to cram what should be a two – or three-year process into about eight months. Were it not for the excellent relationships NSR scouts have with college coaches, it would be all but impossible for these deserving athletes to land on a college roster.

However, with an ear to the ground, NSR scouts are well positioned to help even those prospects who are late to the recruiting game.

If you are in that position, fill out this form and an NSR scout will contact you ASAP.
